Pre Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder or PMDD is defied as a condition which is marked by severe depression symptoms, irritability, and tension before menstruation. The regular symptoms evident during this period are mood swings, bloated sensations, pain, anxiety, irritability and food craving.Instead of feeling low and depressed, there are various ways in which you can deal with this problem. Gynecologist, Dr Praveena Shenoi, Manipal Hospital, Bangalore, has put forward certain remedies to deal with this condition.


Why do you have this problem?
This severe premenstrual condition blues start two weeks before the menstrual cycle and lasts till the onset of it. Mostly experienced by overworked women in the age group of late 30s and early 40s, it occurs due to sedentary lifestyles youngsters lead today. According to her, young ladies nowadays hardly find any time to exercise, eat properly and relax. This leads to extreme hormonal balances and hence PMDD.

What are the signs>
PMDD is recognized by depression, anxiety, irritability, lack of concentration, suicidal tendencies (in severe cases) along with insomnia or hyper insomnia, food cravings and need for emotional closeness. Physical symptoms such as headaches, breast swelling, bloating of the body and joint pains are also associated with this disorder.

How to treat it?
Dr. Shenoi feels that most of the mild PMDD cases can be solved with a change in lifestyle. Ceratin things need to be followed regularly. This includes exercise and yoga as a part of your daily routine. Eat lots of fesh fruits and vegetables. Eat correctly. Drink a lot of water and fresh fruit juices. Avoid refined fats and sugar. PMDD could also occur due to calcium deficiency in the body. So it is advisable to eat calcium rich food. This can be taken as a supplement along with vitamin B6.

Dandruff Remedies
  • Fenugreek seeds: One of the most important remedies in the treatment of dandruff is the use of fenugreek seeds. Soak two tablespoons of these seeds overnight in water and and make a fine paste in the morning. This paste should be applied all over the scalp and left for few minutes. The hair should then be washed thoroughly.
  • Lime:Over a sink, squirt lemon juice directly on your scalp and gently massage the juice in with the tips of your fingers. Make sure you cover your entire scalp to get best results. Let the lemon juice work its wonders for about 15 minutes, then wash your hair as you normally would. The use of a teaspoon of fresh lime juice for the last rinse, while washing the hair, is also another useful way which will make your hair glow and also prevents dandruff.
  • Curd,honey,lemon:Take two tbsp of curd,few drops of honey and lemon juice. Then apply to your scalp and scrub before taking bath.
  • Coconut and hot water:Apply coconut oil to scalp and scrub dead skin with fingers or brush. Hold head under hot water in shower for few minutes. This shows immediate results that last 6 month to a year.
  • Olive oil and limejuice:Mix 1 tblspn of Olive oil with 1 tspn of limejuice. Apply well on the scalp and cover the head by tying an old scarf.Keep it on overnight and shampoo the next morning.
  • Baking Soda and shampoo:Mix some baking soda to the shampoo. Mix Well. Apply on your hair scalp and leave it on till it starts burning. If it don't start to burn its not working.
  • 10-20 aspirin tablets:Crush 10-20 aspirin tablets and add handfull of liquid (shampoo) and apply to scalp. Wait for 10 minutes, then massage scalp and shampoo . Rinse out and dry hair as usual.
  • Vinegar: Use as much vinegar as you can and pour it directly on your scalp. Rub for 5-10 min. Rinse. Repeat if needed. This works for only mild dandruff.

Quick Home Remedies for Back Pain

Almost everyone suffers from back pain. Unless you have a major injury or disc problem, your doctor may not be of much help to you other than prescribe some pain medication and advise you to rest. However some simple home remedies can be very effective in relieving you of backaches. Even better, you can help ensure that you won't have to endure similar discomfort in the future.


  • Include garlic in your daily diet. Eat two to three cloves of garlic in a day. It is an effective home remedy.
  • Boil ten tulsi leaves in one cup of water until the syrup is reduced to half a cup. Add salt to it after cooling. Take this mixture daily. For severe backache, take it twice a day.
  • You could take a mixture of five black pepper corns, five cloves and one-gram dry ginger powder in your tea at least twice a day.
  • Take half a gram of dalchini powder with one-teaspoon honey at least twice a day for best results.
  • Include in diet tomato, carrot, cabbage, cucumber, lettuce, and at least two lightly cooked vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, carrot.
  • Include foods that have rich Vitamin C content, such as citrus fruit, tomatoes, blueberries and strawberries, in your diet.
  • Mix 1 tbsp glucose or honey in warm water and have it in the morning, on an empty stomach. It is a simple, yet effective way to get relief from backpain.
  • Take out the juice of one lemon and add some common salt to it. Intake this, twice a day.

Massage Oils
  • Garlic oil can also be effective in curing backache. To prepare garlic oil, fry ten cloves of garlic in 60 ml of oil (mustard oil, sesame oil or coconut oil). Strain the oil, let it cool down a bit and massage the back with it.
  • A self massage with eucalyptus oil is known to be beneficial.
  • Warm mustard oil can also be used.
  • Mint oil has been found effective in curing backache. Lightly massage your back using some mint oil. It will give relief from the pain.
  • You can also massage with turpentine oil.

Important Tips for Regular Care
  • If you have a chronic back problem, keep yourself warm and eat hot items.
  • Apply some heat to the back, using hot water bottle or hot water bag. This would give instant relief from the pain.
  • While sleeping, sleep on a firm mattress.
  • Avoid sleeping face down.
  • Every time you lift something, remember to bend your knees first, this will prevent your lower back from getting tense causing damage to your spine and back muscles.
  • Never twist while lifting.
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects in the last couple of weeks of your pregnancy.
  • Do not sit in firm chairs supporting the lumbar area with a pillow. This will help you keep your waist and lower back in the proper position.

  • Apple cider vinegar is another good home remedy for vomiting. Add 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar with 1 tbsp of honey. Dilute this mixture in normal water and have it before you go to bed.
  • Treating vomiting with rice water is a trusted remedy. Boil 1/2 cup of rice in 1 to 1 and 1/2 cup of water. When the rice is cooked, remove them and drink the residual water. This ceases the vomiting.

  • Heat 2 cardamoms on a dry tava. Powder them and add a tsp honey and take frequently.

TIPS FOR PREVENTING
  • Try to eat less, full stomach produces vomiting in many cases.
  • Don't sleep immediately after having meals.
  • Sleep on right side. This will prevent the stomach content coming into mouth.
  • For the first 12 hours after vomiting you should avoid all solid foods but increase the amount of fluids you are taking in. For the following 12 hours you should slowly start taking in solid foods such as soups, mashed potatoes, rice and oatmeal. Don’t over load your stomach but eat until the feeling of hunger is gone.
